Wastepaper and Cardboard

Recycling paper is vital to ensure you reduce your environmental impact and to reduce unnecessary general waste. Industry and commerce dispose of approximately 12.5 million tons of paper and cardboard in the UK each year; most paper is recyclable and can be diverted away from landfill sites!

Interesting Facts: -

  • Every ton of recycled paper or cardboard can save up to 17 trees, two cubic yards of landfill capacity and 4100 kW/hours of electricity!
  • Did you know that 70% less energy is used when making new paper from recycled stock than when using virgin pulp!

Process

  • BOILING: At the recycling facility, the paper is separated by type and grade. It is then placed inside a big vat called a 'pulper' where it is chopped into pieces and then water is added.
  • SCREENING: During this process, the pulp is put through screens to remove items such as plastic tape. Larger pulp fibers are separated into smaller fibers, and any remaining bulk materials such as staples and paper clips are removed.
  • DEINKING: The industrial process of removing printing ink from paper fibers of recycled paper to make deinked pulp. The key in the deinking process is the ability to detach ink from the fibers. This is achieved by a combination of mechanical action and chemical means.

Next, the pulp is refined, color-stripped, and bleached. It is then converted to paper sheets where are wound into giant rolls and removed from the paper making machine.
